Gastr del Sol’s second album Crookt, Crackt, or Fly returns to vinyl for the first time in over a decade, retaining its strange, singular force more than 30 years after its original release. A significant evolution from The Serpentine Similar, this album deepens the band’s minimalist instincts with a more fractured and exploratory approach.
The shift reflects a change in lineup: bassist Ken “Bundy” Brown departed, while guitarist and sonic manipulator Jim O’Rourke joined David Grubbs, initially reworking earlier material into the radically restructured ‘20 Songs Less’ single before becoming a full-time member. The resulting sound is defined by spiky acoustic guitar interplay, subtle field recordings, tape edits and sudden eruptions of noise, jazz, and drone.
