Celebrated Blues artist Patrick Sweany returns with his much-anticipated new record Baby, It’s Late.
It’s been a long seven years since the release of his last album Ancient Noise. After touring and recording relentlessly for 15 years, the COVID pandemic provided a much-dreaded, but much-needed pause. As things began to open back up, Sweany leaned into his adopted hometown of Nashville, writing songs for other performers, lending his voice to some commercials, and resuming his Monday night residency at The 5 Spot with The Tiger Beats, his old-school combo that plays 50’s and 60’s era Blues numbers. That band – McKinley James on guitar, Ted Pecchio on bass, and Jason Smay on drums – became the foundation of the first new songs Sweany began crafting.
Sweany also struck up a close friendship with legendary session guitarist JD Simo after a stint of touring together, and the two of them formed another local project, the Soul/Funk rock band known as Super Felon, with drummer Adam Abrashoff. Together these two groups of musicians would be the foundation for Baby, It’s Late, Sweany‘s ninth full-length release. Tracking in McKinley James’ Red Lodge studio and JD Simo‘s House of Grease studio, the collection quickly took shape.
“These are some of the most in-demand players in town,” says Sweany. “They know when it sounds right, and when it doesn’t. I trusted them completely to not only get what I was going after, but push each song to be better.”
They tracked nearly everything live on the floor – just a band in a room – and the results are some of the rawest, most personal sounds Sweany has ever captured on record. In keeping with this direct approach, Sweany also produced the record himself, a first in his storied career.
After over 20 years writing, recording and touring, Sweany knows more than most that you can’t rush the process. You have to wait until the songs are ready. In that regard, baby, it’s never too late.
