This critical essay focuses on Alta Isadore Gould’s story-length poem “The Veteran’s Bride,” first released in Michigan in 1894. The story told by Gould illustrates an underlying nineteenth-century fertility religion analogous to Wicca, suggesting that Wicca was present in the United States prior to Gardner’s twentieth-century rendition.
Additionally, a supplementary chapter examines Gould’s “Allan Worth,” which is a Female Warrior Ballad. “Allan Worth” supports Gould’s exploration of a potential goddess cult and the theme of androgyny as a pathway to peace, as reflected in “The Veteran’s Bride.”
