Hedgehogs CARE HANDBOOK

Hedgehogs are among the most fascinating small mammals kept
as pets today. With their prickly appearance, shy temperament,
and curious habits, they captivate animal lovers across the world.
Belonging to the family Erinaceidae, hedgehogs are nocturnal, insectivorous
creatures that have adapted to diverse environments ranging from deserts to
woodlands. There are about 17 recognized species of hedgehogs, spread across
parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, though not naturally found in the Americas
or Australia.
Unlike rodents, which they are often mistakenly compared with, hedgehogs
are more closely related to shrews and moles. Their distinctive feature-the
spiny coat-is made of modified hairs called quills. These quills serve as their
primary defense mechanism against predators, as hedgehogs can roll into a
tight ball, exposing only their sharp spines. This natural armor, combined
with their solitary and cautious nature, makes them unique among small
mammals.
