Extreme Lakeland

Extreme Lakeland by Nadir Khan and Tom McNally is a stunning photographic celebration of all that makes the Lake District a magnet for those with a heart for adventure and who want to immerse themselves in the beauty of the hills and mountains of this jewel in the English landscape.

From the crags of the high fells to the lakes and tarns for which the Lakes is famous, Nadir and Tom showcase incredible adventure sports through the seasons, including rock climbing, mountain biking, fell running, wild swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, base jumping and ski touring.

Alongside a foreword by renowned rock climber Leo Houlding, and original illustrations by Anna Sharpe, there are inspirational literary contributions from wild swimmer Gilly McArthur, fell runner Ellis Bland, climbers Anna Taylor and Peter Goulding, and adventurer Jon Sparks. Author Biography

Nadir Khan began his photographic journey while studying dentistry at the University of Glasgow. His dad gave him an old Canon camera and it became his companion on early mountaineering adventures to Glencoe and Ben Nevis, recording the corries, gullies and ridges that he and his friends found themselves in. Nadir’s early photographic influences were the stunning landscapes of Ansel Adams and the adventure photography work of Galen Rowell. Emulating his heroes, he would make Cibachrome prints in his student-flat-turned-darkroom, selling them to make enough money to buy film and camera gear and pay bus fares up to the Highlands from Glasgow. After a career as a hospital-based specialist oral surgeon, working on facial trauma and reconstructive surgery, Nadir now partners with some of the most well-known outdoor brands in the world, working with elite athletes across many disciplines. Tom McNally has been taking pictures for as long as he can remember. One of his earliest memories is being totally captivated by the process of making photographs, watching his dad work black and white magic under the spell of red light in the darkroom. After graduating in photography and specialising in social documentary, his work now fuses these practices with his love of adventure sports. Tom enjoys telling stories with pictures, working with athletes, brands and publications to produce engaging and authentic imagery. Some of his most enjoyable assignments document amazing experiences in remote places, but the landscape and people of where he lives, in the English Lake District, provide constant inspiration and subject matter. Tom’s photographs have been widely published, from cover shots for The Times, to articles in industry leading publications such as Sidetracked Magazine.
