It began with an app. Not a revolution, not a referendum, not a law announced in Parliament. No grand announcement, no marching bands. Just an app.
It was called The Wallet. It downloaded itself in the dead of night, pushed onto every phone by “system update.” By morning it sat neatly between weather and maps, a little icon with a smiling crown. No one remembered asking for it. No one remembered agreeing to it. But there it was.
The adverts were everywhere. Billboards with laughing families: “Choice. Convenience. Confidence.” Videos of glowing QR codes waved at airports. Pensioners smiling as they tapped into GP surgeries. Politicians shaking hands at supermarket checkouts.
It promised to do everything: hold your driving licence, prove your age, log into the NHS, pay for your train, record your vaccinations, even store your pets’ medical records. “One login. One wallet. One nation.“
People loved it. Who wouldn’t? Airports became faster. Banks easier. Queues shorter. The first week, pubs boasted they could now scan underage drinkers in seconds. Pensioners clapped when their bus passes lit up green.
The rich adopted it with smug enthusiasm. A hedge funder at a dinner party boasted he hadn’t touched a credit card in months. A minor royal waved her phone at Heathrow, skipping customs entirely, calling it “the future of freedom.”
The middle class followed because everyone else was. Mothers found child benefit cleared faster. Teachers discovered their payroll slips now pinged into their Wallet. Trains gave discounts for “verified passengers.”
The poor had no choice. Benefits shifted to “digital transfer only.” Housing offices stopped accepting paper forms. Migrant workers found their permits only renewed through Wallet verification.
Within a year, not having the Wallet was no longer an option.
And that was when the nudges began.
