Meet Phorusrhacos, the “Terror Bird” that ruled South America about 15 million years ago during the Miocene epoch. Standing up to 2.5 meters (8 feet) tall, this flightless predator had a massive, hooked beak perfect for delivering powerful strikes to its prey. Despite its inability to fly, Phorusrhacos was built for speed, using its strong legs to chase down smaller animals.
Its name, meaning “Wrinkle Bearer,” refers to features on its jawbone, which helped paleontologists piece together its fearsome reputation. As one of the largest members of the terror bird family, it left a lasting legacy as a top predator in its prehistoric world.
