The Basilosaurus, despite its name, was not a dinosaur but actually an ancient whale that lived around 40 million years ago during the late Eocene period. This prehistoric marine mammal was a formidable predator of the ancient seas, growing up to 60 feet long! 

Unlike modern whales, Basilosaurus had a long, snake-like body and strong jaws filled with sharp teeth, perfect for catching its prey. It’s considered one of the earliest known fully aquatic whales, providing key insights into the evolution of today’s gentle giants of the sea.
