I read this book aloud to my 8 and 10yr old. The book follows a young Māori girl who is white presenting as she navigates her childhood through adventure and exploration of her whānau history. The author portrays the town, the people and the way of life in the 70s/80s so well. She touches on themes like colonisation, history, being a white presenting Māori and Māori tikanga that was engaging for my girls but also respectful. I also enjoyed it very much. I would say this is better read a loud so that you can discuss certain topics as they arise.
