A number of emerging Japanese anime directors have been hailed as the next Hayao Miyazaki. Although Your Name isn't from Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli, director Makoto Shinkai's bold attempt to extend the boundaries of classic anime could easily be the latest flagship product from that illustrious production house. Shinkai's candid admission that Your Name falls short of his storytelling ambitions is understandable. There are certainly ambiguities, but it's still a richly complex film that rewards repeated viewings. Not perfect, but nevertheless a remarkable and visually exquisite animated feature film.
