Description

Excerpt from Wagner's Opera Lohengrin: Containing the German Text, With an English Translation, and the Music of All the Principal Airs The intruders are expelled by the King and people, and the marriage takes place; but, when the bride and bridegroom are left in-the nuptia' chamber, Elsa, roused by the evil suggestions of Ortrud, begins, in Spite of her promise, to question the knight, who in vain endeavors to allay her suspicions. Frederick, who enters the room with the intention of assailing his former antagonist, is slain by him at once, and, on the following mom ing, the explanation unwisely solicited by Elsa, is given by the stranger in the presence of the King. He is the son of King Percival, keeper of the mys terious cup known as the Holy Grail, to whose service he is attached, and whose name is lohen grin. It is to the Grail that he is indebted for his invisible power, but now his name is revealed he must no longer remain in Brabant. The swan returns with the boat to hear him away, but he re moves a gold chain from its neck, and in its stead appears the youth Godfrey, who has been changed to a swan by the sorceress Ortrud, and who is now declared rightful Duke of Brabant, while Lohen grin departs, to the intense grief of his bride and the king and people, who have lost so valuable an ally.
