Mike King is probably New Zealand's best known stand-up comedian, with numerous live and TV credits to his name. Yet his beginnings were modest: he grew up in a small NZ town, left school aged 15, joined the navy and became a chef. When you think Mike King, your think funny guy, but he has also lived every day of his adult life with depression. After coming to terms with his various demons at the end of 2006 his life suddenly hit the skids: his father in law died, then Mike suffered a stroke while at a million-dollar poker tournament in Australia, he had a motorbike accident and in the midst of all these trials his depression returned with a vengeance. Mike King's biography, as you would expect, is both funny and confronting: searingly honest and revealing.
