Vietnam Air War is the most comprehensive film record ever produced of the aircraft, weaponry, strategy and tactics deployed during the Vietnam War. Compiled entirely from authentic archive front line footage and combat film – including numerous air to air and gum camera sequences – the programme covers all significant USAF, US Navy and Marine Corps aircraft types deployed in Vietnam. Everything from World War Two era piston engine bombers to the latest Mach 2 supersonic jet fighters saw service in Vietnam. The first ground attack and close support missions were flown by T-28 Trojans, A-1 Skyraiders, B-57 Canberras and B-26 Invaders. These early ‘Mud Movers’ eventually gave way to F-4 Phantoms, F-5A Freedom Fighters and – most importantly, the F-100 Super Sabre. Missions against North Vietnam itself were flown by an equally diverse range of aircraft including the B-52 Stratofortress, F-105 Thuderchief, F-8 Crusader, A-6 Intruder, A-4 Skyhawk and A-7 Corsair. All these aircraft and more are featured in action on this DVD, with much rare footage. The most enduring symbol of the entire war however is undoubtedly the helicopter, Vietnam Air War also provides a detailed look at the many diverse types deployed, from the Bell UH-1 Iroquois transports on ‘Air Cav’ operations to AH-1G Huey Cobra gunships hammering Viet Cong positions with cannon and rockets.
