Its variety ranges from a practical lesson in hemstitching to well-illustrated directions for what the Victorians termed "fancywork" decorative stitching such as Bulgarian, Catalan, Hungarian, and Baro embroidery; netting; Berlin wool-work; Bohemian, Carrickmacross, Innishmacsaint, and reticella lace and numerous other forms of needlepoint. Detailed directions explain an array of projects-sewing doilies in Hungarian embroidery, knotting fringes as a finished edge, trimming dress collars and cuffs with punched work, making a lace collar in Brussels braid, and creating many other beautiful items.
