Sandra Counahan was educated in both Northern Ireland and England and qualified as a nurse in 1966. Her mother, a needlewoman, taught her colour embroidery when she was a small child and she continued to do needlework and crochet throughout her adult life. In 1990 she met Sister Teresa Margaret McCarthy, the reviver of Mountmellick Work, and had her first lesson with her. Since then, she has continued to hone her technique and has given classes in Ireland, Australia and the US.
