"Good summary of how TradeMe got to where it is today"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

The book is really divided into two parts: the story of where TradeMe came from and how it got to the stage of selling to Fairfax, and; how TradeMe have grown since the sale and some of the key learnings from their successes and failures to date. All in all, a good read especially the first part which should be inspirational to all budding entrepreneurs. It will also give you a new appreciation that this business is not simply a eBay rip off!

"Bought this book as soon as it came out." Purchased on Mighty Ape

Excellent reading, not only for general reading but has helped me with ideas in developing my own business. I just wish it went into more detial rahter than being so high level. Just being picky though as this book is a good read.

Description

Few companies have captured the hearts and minds of New Zealanders like Trade Me.

Originally built by university drop-out Sam Morgan on a borrowed laptop, Trade Me was to change the face of retailing in New Zealand, destroying newspapers classifieds businesses and going on to become part of the vernacular as some 2.5 million Kiwis became members.

Now for the first time the story of Trade Me is told, the first 10 years of this remarkable company. Author Mike O’Donnell is Head of Operations at Trade Me and tells the whole story. From fragile beginnings, to being laughed out of the room by Telecom, through to becoming the number one force on the New Zealand internet and being sold for a staggering $750 million.

Featuring a foreword by Trade Me founder Sam Morgan and numerous interviews with all members of the original Trade Me team, this is the first ever history of arguably New Zealand’s most loved company, and has the added benefit of telling the story from the inside.

Author Biography:

Author Mike "MOD" O'Donnell is Head of Operations at Trade Me and tells the whole story of the first 10 years: from fragile beginnings, to being laughed out of the room by Telecom, through to becoming the number one force on the New Zealand internet and then sold for $750 million to Fairfax. Told with a mixture of narrative and anecdotes, Trade Me - The Inside Story pieces together the unlikely tale of this maverick Kiwi company that changed the way New Zealanders got jobs, bought cars, houses and anything and everything else you can think of - from ghosts in bottles to a tractor with a farm attached! With unique access to data and historical material, O'Donnell has also bought together the numbers side of the story, showing Trade Me growth figures each year and the weird and colourful collection of auctions along the way. This means as well as a rollicking good read about a bunch of young people taking on big business and winning, it is also full of serious observations of the principles and strategies that enabled this Kiwi start-up to beat the likes of eBay and Yahoo in New Zealand.
