Description

This discussion on the development of tourism takes account of the changes in the nature and expansion of tourism from the late 1970s onwards and of the changing attitudes and findings reflected in the vast amount of new literature on the subject. In this edition the author has elaborated on the elements and agents of development and includes development processes in rural, urban and Third World areas alongside the discussion of coastal and skifield development. Since tourist development is no longer seen solely in terms of destinations and much more consideration is now given to origins or markets and associated linkages, the author has placed tourist development in the broader context of the development debate. He deals particularly with the impact of tourism and tourism's contribution to development. The author also attempts to anticipate the directions tourist development might take in the future.
