Description

Excerpt from Tom Tyler and His Wife The title-page of the quarto of Tom Tyler dated 1661 bears the words The second Impression and informs us that the play was 'prz'm'ed and dcz'ed about a hundred years ago.' Though nothing is now known concerning this earlier edition, there is no reason to doubt the statement, at any rate so far as it refers to the printing. The play is unquestionably an old one for which the printer must have had some early copy. Had his copy been manuscript he would certainly have advertised the piece as new to the press. Moreover the entry Tom tyler. C[omedy]. Occurs in Archer's catalogue of 1656. Kirkman's words imply that the original edition appeared somewhere about the middle of the sixteenth century.
