"Intellectual and intriguing"
5 stars"

This is a complicated film, particularly if you (like me) haven't read the book. Never the less, if you pay attention, you should soon figure out whats going on. If you like films demanding of your attention, and appealling to your intellect, you can't go past Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. It's genuinely intriguing, and entertaining. Gary Oldman plays the lead role stunningly, and is supported by equally as good co-stars. The whole ‘feel’ of this film is fantastic, the tone is perfectly balanced, the acting superb, and other than the complexity of the plot, this film could not be any better.

To quote Graeme Tuckett (film reviewer for ‘The Dominion Post’, who gave the film 4.5 stars) “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a rare film, of a rare book. I could not have been more relieved, and impressed, by how it has turned out.”

Description

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

In 1970s England the head of MI6, Control (John Hurt), dispatches an agent (Mark Strong) to meet with a Hungarian general who knows the identity of a Soviet spy in the organization's ranks. However, the mission goes wrong, and the general dies before he can reveal the information. Undersecretary Oliver Lacon (Simon McBurney) calls veteran agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman) back from forced retirement to ferret out the mole and stop the flow of vital British secrets to the Russians.

Critic Reviews:

  • " So beautifully executed and so visually absorbing and so atmospherically hypnotic that I wonder this: would it have been awfully greedy to have hoped to have wholly understood it, too? " – Deborah Ross
  • " The movie is riveting in the exact sense of the word: We feel nailed to the screen in the impossible task of working out what is going on-let alone why it matters. " – David Thomson
  • " Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy can assert a serious claim to be the best espionage film ever made. " – Donald Clarke
