Based on Erich Maria Remarque's novel of the same name, Sirk's Oscar® nominated feature takes place in a burnt-out Germany during the dying days of World War Two. John Gavin stars as Ernst Graeber, sent home on leave from the Russian front, who finds his town destroyed by Allied bombing. Frantically searching for his parents, he meets childhood friend Elizabeth Kruse and together they try to wrest sanity from a world shattered by fear and hatred.
