This was deemed un-american by the peo ple of the United States and steps were taken to force a complete cessation of the widely spreading practice Divers laws were enacted by the national Congress, the most notable at that time being the drastic and far-reaching edmunds-tucker Bill of 1882. This made it a misdemeanor to hold out to the world more than one woman as a wife, and was punishable with both fine and imprisonment.
