Dauwd’s sterling debut album Theory of Colours arrives on Ninja Tune's electronica-focused Technicolour (Hieroglyphic Being) sub-label after previous releases on such noted labels as Ghostly International, Kompakt and Pictures.

US-born, Wales-raised Dauwd Al Hilali is an integral member of the Berlin collective, club night and radio show, African Acid Is The Future.

Much like Techni's Jay Daniels album from a few months back, Dauwd's long player moves a classic sound into bold, newly rounded shapes. Where his Kompakt and Pictures releases were a cross of Low-Fi beats and Deep House rhythms, Theory Of Colours extracts these styles and adds a layer of Trip-Hop style fuzz to the album. This mix calls to mind the work of Lee Gamble on the bubbling techno of the title track ‘Theory of Colours’, while the mid-morning shuffle of ‘Glass Jelly’ is pure Sound Signature in effect.

Pulling inspiration from electronic music legends like Terry Riley, Raymond Scott and the seminal Radiophonic Workshop period in the late ‘50s and ‘60s, Theory of Colours draws a unique line between influences as disparate as hazy Detroit House and early German Krautrock.

“Dauwd spins a beguiling and intricate web of analogue synth and deep-tech elements into a stunning debut album Theory of Colours 8.5/10 – The 405

“Taking his time over the making of this album was time very well spent indeed.” 8/10 – Pop Matters

“Theory Of Colours is a house record that feels unhurried, unbothered and all the better for it. It's a dance floor album that isn't all that concerned with the dance floor, which makes it a pleasure to listen to from front to back.” 4.0/5 – Resident Advisor
