"Really surreal swordplay"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This is a game for those who love fantasy. Magic/Swords/Creatures in a rich graphic environment. Awesome.

The sword play is heaps of fun. Even the basic swordplay is cool but you develop more complicated routines as you go. There's even coup-de-grace combinations that occur.

The world is rich with lots of cool creatures and people to meet. Many of the people have a recurring role in the story. And how you interact with them influences how they regard you in the future.

The plot is a combination of main and sub-quests but in someways linear rather than open ended. About half way between Knights of the Old Republic and Oblivion.

The main twist with this RPG is that the choices you make are not black and white. They are borderline, and each choice then has plot consequences later. Including stopping you from pursuing other quests, so there's good replayability.

I'd recommend this game to anyone who likes Fantasy and RPGs. 9.5/10

Oh yeah – there is a bit of sex and garphic violence in here too. Hence the rating.

This game also took me by surprise. I had heard reviews by other people who loved it and decided to try it out for myself.

I'm glad I did. This game is excellent. The game typically can take between 40 – 70 hours to complete and the graphics are very good. The music is very, very good and suits the game perfectly. This is not just “another” RPG. You can have different third person views, depending on your preference. My favourite is Over The Shoulder mode and behaves like a FPS (WSAD keys etc). As you upgrade his skills, the sword moves and sequences of attacks are amazing and very quick. It's fun to just go around looking for fights, to watch Geralt go nuts on whatever mobs you are fighting. It's not a spam clicky game like Titan Quest or Diablo 2. It's a timed click system which keeps you on your toes (the time to click changes, depending on which attack sequence he is on). There are also very cool features, for example. Decisions you make early on in the game can have big effects in the later chapters. A great story, good story telling. All in all, it's a great package.

However, the game is a little unstable on Vista but I have a dual OS system (Win XP/Vista) and it runs perfectly fine on XP. There's a major patch coming out in the next few weeks that should address a number of issues. For their first game, I have to say that these guys did an excellent job and will be looking forward to a sequel (if there is one).

"KOTOR meets Oblivion"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I've been waiting for a game like this ever since I finished KOTOR!

Bioware have really outdone themselves with Witcher. The graphics crap all over Oblivion and the voice acting is probably the best that I've seen in any game.

The story isn't exactly original – the protagonist loses his memory and bad guys show up stealing stuff and killing people. The difference here is the R18+ rating, it's not limited to the usual boring stuff you'd encounter with every other RPG, believe it or not there are quests to get laid! Didn't really see that coming. And it actually focuses on the drugs/alcohol, sex and violence.

The only problem I have with this game is it has a tendancy to crash when returning back into a large area, the latest update is supposed to correct this issue for Vista 32bit but they obviously have some bugs to work out. Loading times are overly long as well but given the content for each area and the number of NPC's you can understand why.

The Witcher represents the pinnacle of storytelling in role-playing games, shattering the line between good and evil with a world where moral ambiguity reigns. In a beautiful, rich game universe created by artists first, technology second, the player becomes his own hero in an epic, action-packed narrative uniquely defined by his actions. Returning to the roots of the role-playing genre with a fresh and modern approach, The Witcher emphasizes story and character development in a vibrant world, while incorporating tactically-deep real-time combat like no game before it.

Immersed in a vivid but harsh fantasy world, the player assumes the role of a white-haired witcher named Geralt, a renowned monster-slayer-for-hire and master swordsman with superhuman strength and reflexes. While trying to regain his lost memory, Geralt unwillingly becomes involved in a world-shaking power struggle. Created to provide entertainment for both fans of role-playing games and those seeking fast-paced action, The Witcher brings together epic storytelling and dynamic, visually stunning, and tactically deep action.

  • A charismatic and unique character, Geralt is a mutant swordmaster and professional monster slayer.
  • Choose from over 250 special abilities correlated to attributes, combat skills and magical powers to build the character in a way best suited to tactical needs and style of play.

  • Full of turns, twists and ambiguous moral decisions which have real impact on the storyline.
  • All quests can be accomplished in several ways and the game has three different endings depending on the player’s actions and choices throughout the adventure.
  • Engage in complex yet intuitive real-time combat based on real medieval sword-fighting techniques.
  • Motion capture performed by medieval fighting experts at Frankfurt’s renowned Metric Minds studio, resulting in 600 spectacular and authentic in-game combat animations.
