"The Wackness!"
5 stars"

The Wackness, set in New York city 1994, is the story of Luke Shapiro (played by Josh Peck of Nickelodeons “Drake and Josh”) a teenage drug dealer who has just graduated high school, and his psychiatrist Dr. Jeffery Squires (played extremely well by Ben Kingsley).

This film is filled with humour while still remaining genuine and moving. It is a coming of age story but certainly does not fit coming of age story cliches, it's a story that I feel some people could relate to well . A very unique movie with great performances all round, Josh Peck is surprisingly good, Ben Kingsley is fantastic and Mary-Kate Olsen did quite well also, playing an unusual role.

The wackness is set to a great soundtrack that I think really captured the sound of urban New York 1994, featuring artists such as Notorious B.I.G, Method Man, DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest.

Overall a good, solid, genuine movie that i would reccommend watching to anybody, especially fans of 90's hip-hop.

Description

Sometimes it's right to do the wrong things.

During the summer of 1994, New Yorker Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) has just graduated high school. Now faced with three hot months in the city before going off to college, Luke spends the time dealing pot, listening to hip hop and exchanging his wares for therapy sessions with psychiatrist Dr. Squires (Ben Kingsley). Luke is also infatuated with his popular and beautiful classmate Stephanie (Olivia Thirlby), who is also hanging around Manhattan for the summer and just happens to be Dr. Squires' step daughter. As the long days idle by, Luke begins to build two of the most important relationships of his life…

Critic Reviews:

  • " The film's subtle shifts in tone and intent are handled brilliantly by Josh Peck, who plays a troubled teen drug dealer with the damaged bravado and raw honesty of a young De Niro. " – Leigh Paatsch (Herald Sun, Australia)
  • " An exercise in style and wit, two commodities that never go out of fashion. " – Kelly Vance (East Bay Express)
  • " Kingsley is likewise on form and hits home with some terrifically world-weary one liners, while director Jon Levine brings a refreshing inventiveness to the film. " – David Edwards (Daily Mirror, UK)
