I can't see how a comedy could beat this for best foreign film at the Oscars.

Even though the word ‘Samurai’ is in the title, this is NOT an action movie. There are two duel sequences but Hollywood would not class them as action. And that is the reason why this movie is so good. It isn't aimed at the average American.

If you find this movie boring, you are an average American. You have no taste for drama. Go watch xXx or The Fast and the Furious.

Description

In pre-Meiji Japan, low ranking samurai Seibei Iguchi leads a simple life without glory. As a widower, he does not drink and socialise with fellow samurai, preferring instead to tend to his two daughters and his senile mother. Earning the nickname 'Tasogare Seibei' (Twilight Seibei) as he is always home by nightfall, he struggles in poverty to make ends meet.

Suddenly re-entering Seibei's life is his long time unrequited love Tomoe, who wishes to divorce her brutal husband. However, the samurai code is strict and with social conventions against them, the consequences for the pair may be tragic.

THE TWILIGHT SAMURAI is director Yoji Yamada's 77th feature film in his 40 plus years as a director.

Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2004 Academy Awards THE TWILIGHT SAMURAI is destined to become a classic of the Asian Cinema genre.

    QUOTES:

***** "The Twilight Samurai is an achingly beautiful film whose tranquil surface belies the emotional turmoil just beneath... a true gem." - Chris Bartlett, The Sunday Mail

***** "This poignant period piece is a must-see." - Chris Bartlett, The Sunday Mail

****1/2 "Every so often, those willing to experiment with less mainstream, more artistic (perhaps foreign) films are blessed with a motion picture that can be described as truly moving, realistically driven and emotionally powerful. These films can make us realise the values of being human and touch our hearts in such a way they often reduce us to tears. The Twilight Samurai is one such film." - Luke McGarry, TIME OFF

****1/2 "The Twilight Samurai is a must for cinemagoers who like to be moved, and especially for fans of Japanese film." Luke McGarry, TIME OFF

"Tender, melancholy, suspenseful and, finally, uplifting." EMPIRE MAGAZINE

    **** "Brilliant." - Rave

"Stylish flick, which harkens back to the work of old masters like Akira Kurosawa " NEW YORK POST
