Excerpt from The Training for an Effective Life The first five chapters in this little book are speeches I made to newcomers to Harvard University at the opening of the academic year in five years between 1904 and 1912; the sixth chapter is an address made in 1909 to the Hotchkiss School, a preparatory school at Lakeville, Connecticut; and the last chapter is an after-dinner speech made to the Asso ciated Harvard Clubs at St. Louis in 1903. Each of these speeches was taken down at the time by a shorthand re porter, and subsequently revised by me. They have all been printed before in newspapers or magazines; but Houghton Mifilin Company have thought it desir able to put them into a more permanent form as a volume of the Riverside Liter ature Series.
