No special knowledge has, therefore, been demanded of the reader by way of prep aration for the substance of what I have intro duced into this volume. By avoiding, as far as possible, all technical language, I have sought to make the inquiry useful to any general read er of intelligence who may be interested to know how to study political economy. But that which I have most at heart is the exten sion of instruction in political economy in all schools and colleges, and the improvement in methods of teaching the subject. I need hardly say that I shall be glad if these pages call out any suggestions by which these two objects may be furthered.
