Description

Travel along the button road with Bert Williams and learn more about his life as a truck driver from the people who knew him. Bert was a real person and his story is told in wool, cotton and linen, buttons, beads and pebbles, cardboard, Dinky miniature toy trucks and Meccano. Bert was known by many different nicknames, which he earned because he worked such long and late hours. Sing about wool bales, cocksfoot or honey bees - all in a day (or night's) work for Bert - to the tune of Baa-baa-blacksheep.

Author Biography:

Mary Kelleher is never far away from needles and thread, fabric and bits of Meccano. She is passionate about history, especially stories about how ordinary people started their lives anew in New Zealand and reinvented themselves over and again to make a living for their families. As soon as David Parker was introduced to the story of Midnight Williams, he could feel his ukulele plucking out the beat of Bert's truck chugging along the road. David loves that The Story of a New Zealand Truck Driver is a fun, engaging way to express local history. David plays and teaches in Titirangi, west Auckland where he lives with his family.
