Greater Long Beach and its South Los Angeles County brethren have a new voice that brings together scholarly and literary minds to spur innovation and reform in the region and contribute to the local cannon. The Southlander editorial team was formed through a collective dialogue among individuals who see a clear need for new and contrary perspectives to that provided by most regional and national media. The publication features an in-depth interview with "City of Quartz" author Mike Davis along with many other incisive essays and artistic submissions that present Greater Long Beach and its South Los Angeles County fringes in new perspectives. The Southlander is also the official publication of the "ReThinking Greater Long Beach Conference Series," which debuted October 30, 2004, at the Southern California Library for Social Studies and Research. Members from the academic, public and private sectors gathered with the intent of holding the first of many dialogues about a region ripe for significant quality of life enhancements as well as artistic interpretation and scholarly inquiry.
The content contemplated within The Southlander and in subsequent 'ReThink' meetings seeks to advance those same pursuits.
