Description

Excerpt from The South African Mining Journal, Vol. 25: With Which Is Incorporated "the South African Mines, Commerce and Industries"; June 17, 1916 Mr. Jas. E. Thomas (president, Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa) pointed out that the problem of scientific research in connection with industries and industrial methods is at present agitating the minds-of all the thinking people of the Empire. 'he had before him an abstract of a meeting of an influential engineering society, held in England on the 1st May, at which it was pointed out in a paper read by Mr. Flemming, that youths having a technical turn of mind should continue their education for some years more than is at present customary, not only for their own benefit, but also for the benefit of the Empire. The speaker went on to refer to the methods of the Japanese, whose Government sent youths to the best educational cen tres of the world in order that industries in Japan should benefit by the application of the best and most scientific methods. The two countries that had devoted the most atten tion to scientific research, viz., Germany and Japan, had undoubtedly made the greatest commercial progress during the last 40 years. Where, he asked, would we have been to-day if the Germans had concentrated all their efforts on commercial work instead of about 99 per cent. On war work? Proceeding, he instanced the condition of affairs in the United, States, where over 50 industrial concerns had their own private laboratories in addition to reaping immense benefit from work done in Government laboratories. He thought the whole subject was one of most pressing need and that every endeavour should be made to induce the Government of this country to help the movement.
