Description

Excerpt from The Sins of the Fathers: Or the Wye Valley Mystery There was never the slightest murmur among the workmen which was not listened to and taken into consideration, and if there was a legitimate cause for the murmur, the remedy was soon found and applied. If there were no just cause, the com plainant was led by reason to see this, and the matter ended. Though a large employer of labour, John Moorhouse was a friend of the toilers, and they knew it. For some years previous to the time our story opens Mr. Moorhouse had taken a keen interest and an active part in Church extension work, especially in the industrial parts of the city, and hundreds of working people were receiving spiritual ministrations and pastoral care through his muniti cence. He argued among his co-religionists that he did not consider it right or just for people to make money by the bone and muscle of the workers and treat them as if they were mere automatic machines, without minds or souls.
