It was a restriction upon old, I might say, inveterate, practices, prepa ratory to their express and absolute prohibition. Such were the law of divorce, the law of polygamy, and the law of the goel, or avenger of blood. So, by the restriction on slavery, the law was a schoolmaster to lead to the pure morality, the generous liberty, the impartial justice, and the universal charity of the gospel.
