Excerpt from The Retrospect of Practical Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 34: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; January, 1857 The sudden and more or less complete cessation of all the rational symptoms of phthisis, which many physicians have observed to take place on the supervention of insanity, is a very remarkable instance of the metastasis of morbid action to the brain; in the majority of such cases the course of the pulmonary disease is only suspended for a time, but in some rare instances the disease in the lungs remains dormant or latent during life. I know of one instance, which I myself witnessed, in which the insanity has continued for fifteen years without any re turn of the symptoms indicative of hthisis.
