Description

Hostile MPs, police spies, mass arrests, picked juries, jails that made prisoners ill and killed them - these were just some of the difficulties faced by working people who campaigned for the vote and some measure of equality before the law in the early Victorian period. Much of the best scholarship on the Chartists has been published in scholarly journals and has therefore been unavailable to the general reader. Stephen Roberts is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and is affiliated to the Institute for Advanced Research in Arts & Social Sciences at the University of Birmingham, He is a full time history teacher and researcher.
