Mr. Coats, as a Director, had long taken an active part in the management, and by his generosity had assisted the Directors over many a difficulty, and enabled them to make the Infirmary one of the most complete in the country. He undertook responsibility for the cost of the West Pavilion and Chapel, and built a block which is set apart for infectious diseases, thus greatly assisting the organization and working of the institution. He further erected the beautiful and complete Nurses' Home, which stands apart in the grounds of the Infirmary. It contains accommodation for all the nurses, and is fitted up with an elegance and refinement such as Mr. Coats considered was appropriate to the devoted ladies who form the nursing staff. He also cleared away much old property which overlooked the Infirmary on the south-east side, thereby adding to the amenity and openness of the situation. Even these gifts did not exhaust his generosity to this deserving institution. He was the means, by a donation of, 3,000, of founding "The Paisley Sick Relief Fund," which is administered by the Directors, and has been of much benefit to many unfortunate sufferers. At a meeting of the subscribers and others interested in the Infirmary, held on 9th March, 1900, Mr. Peter Coats was appointed Honorary Life President, in recognition of what he had done for the institution. Mr. James Coats, Junr., of Ferguslie House, in addition to his many gifts for other objects in the town, has shown great liberality to the Infirmary. His contributions to the Building Fund amounted to many thousand pounds, and he presented a complete electric installation, besides furnishings and fittings for almost every department of the building.
