Description

Excerpt from The Monitor, or Jottings of a New York Merchant During a Trip Round the Globe: Embracing Voyages Over the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans; Arabian, Red, and Mediterranean Seas Facts, at which he would assure the reader he has faithft aimed. Another motive prompting its publication is the wish to preserve in a durable form what has been seen of portions of the globe which the author never expects to look upon again. It might be properly termed his printed journal, as the work simply contains jottings of things and scenes; many of them taken fresh upon the spot, and while journeying on the steamer, the omnibus, the car, or stepping beneath some tree, as well as at the close of the day in the room of a hotel, written both in ink and with pencil, as convenience afforded, in the most desultory manner. Without revision or correction, it has been handed to the publisher to be printed and issued in the form of a volume. The author, a business man, and not a book-writer, being conscious of its imperfections, ofi'ers it not for criticism, but as an account given in off-hand jot tings without elaboration; which he begs the reader to accept as a truthful portrayal of things seen and experienced at the time of their occurrence. W'here anything is not correctly noted, or faults have been committed, they are the result of haste and im perfect comprehension, rather than of mi srepresen tation and perversion of the truth. The reader, if having travelled to any extent in foreign lands, or over the broad deep, will readily understand.
