Description

Excerpt from The Minute Men and Other Patriots of Walpole, Mass., In Our Long Struggle for National Independence, 1775 1783 While preparing my History of Walpole for publication in 1905, feeling that the honorable and patriotic part our worthy forefathers had early played in saving this portion of America to the white man and civilization, as well as in their final and more glorious achievement of our National Inde pendence was but little understood, I dwelt to some length on a few of the more vital points of general interest, but omitted many of the patriots' names which were no longer common in our changed population. Finding since that many of the scholars and some of the teachers in our public schools have found the History of substantial pleasure and benefit, to encourage them still further in their grateful appreciation of the great debt we all owe to those self - sacrificing toilers in our behalf, I now offer the following Roll of Honor, not all Minute Men, but, I trust, all Patriots. The highest distinction one can ever receive from another in this country is that of being a worthy descendant of one of its loyal members. The standard is lofty. May you all reach it. Especially would the country rejoice to hear of the regeneration of certain people in our midst who so thoughtlessly brought disgrace upon themselves and dishonor upon the Town by their futile opposition to the Patriots' Memorial, herein represented, the first and only public mark of respect offered here, to those heroic winners of our dearly purchased Independence.
