The book is beautifully illustrated by the enchanting paintings and pen-and-ink drawings of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite - the famous painter of fairies and Fairyland.
ILLUSTRATOR Ida Rentoul Outhwaite was born in Australia in 1888, the second surviving daughter of a presbyterian minister and professor at the University of Melbourne. The family had emigrated from Northern Ireland in the 1870s. Ida and her older sister Annie collaborated on a series of books and songbooks with Ida producing all the illustrations. She also illustrated books for other authors and freelanced for newspapers and magazines. In 1920, she visited England and held an exhibition of her work in Bond St, London. This was a huge success and as a result some of her books were published in England. The last of her major books appeared in 1930, although she continued to illustrate music sheets and make the occasional painting for a book up to her death in 1960.
