But to difcharge this duty even imperfectly, and by thofe means, however inadequate, which the utmolt exertions of diligent enquiry can' afford, is lefs unpardonable than to neglect it entirely. When we cannot recover a per fecft portrait of our friend and our bene faetor, we muft be contented with a few faint outlines. Abundance only implies te jeetion; and where but little can be col leeted, it is necefi'ary to retain every thing. We muft acquicfce in anecdotes of incon fiderable confequence, while thofe of more importance cannot be procured.
