Description

Excerpt from The Laws of Happiness: Or, the Beatitudes as Teaching Our Duty to God, Self and Our Neighbour In sending forth these addresses on the Beatitudes I desire to add a few words of ex planation and apology. In 1883 the line of thought here worked out was indicated in some Meditations published in Volume II. Of my Helps to Meditation. These thoughts were afterwards used in Retreats given to the Associates of the Sisterhood of S. Mary at Peekskill and at Kenosha, and in a Retreat at Toronto. Having been re quested by many to publish them I gave them as a series of addresses in my own Parish Church last Fall, and arranged to have a stenographer report them. I publish them now without any attempt to rewrite them, hav ing merely corrected the stenographer's notes. They thus exhibit faults of style which belong to extempore preaching, but in spite of this I have felt that they would be more acceptable in thisform to those who had heard them delivered, than they would be if I rewrote them. My apol ogy for publishing them must be the requests of many friends, the fact that I have been unable to find any little book on the Beatitudes which gives them more than the most superficial treat ment, and that I believe that their more careful study would be helpful to all.
