Description

In The Lame King, Book 1 of the Faust Legacy Quartet, the memoir of Hauptsturmfuhrer Reinhardt Faustenach turns up after his death and is read by a boyhood friend, a Harvard professor. Through his self-serving confession, the tormented memoirist seeks absolution from his daughter Margitte. The memoir chronicles the gradual moral seduction of a Holocaust criminal's mind as it traces Reinhardt's fortunes from pre-World War 2 Germany through his war years in the Wehrmacht and the SS, to Canada, and finally to his life on the run and in hiding, in his stolen identity as one of his Jewish victims. This is a case study of an ordinary man pursued by agents of justice and by his own demons, who unwittingly inherits and bequeaths a legacy of evil that continues to work itself out with the inevitability of Greek tragedy.
