Author Biography:

Peter Stearns is the Heinz professor of history and dean of the College of Humanties at Carnegie Mellon University. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Social History and has written and edited numerous articles, book reviews, and books. John Hinshaw received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University and has taught there and at Bates College. He has published reviews and articles and is a contributor to the Encyclopedia of Social History.
