During the reign of Henry VI., however, owing to the Wars of the Roses, the English power in Ireland was so much weakened, that the Irish chiefs began to repossess themselves of their former inheritances, and their old system of government in clans, or separate small tribes was revived throughout a great part of the land. One of the results of this 'home rule was that they made war upon each other, and upon the English settlers, killing or driving away each other's cattle, and refusing obedience to any authority.
