An impressive chronicling of the lead up to ourTreaty. The inclusion of full source documents rather than edited/biased parts thereof allows the reader to draw their own conclusions regarding our awesome heritage. A “Must Read” if you ever wondered, “Have we been told the whole story-”
This book, referencing extensive historical documentation, puts the treaty and a lot of other historical decisions taken, back into the context of the time in which they occurred. It simply produces the evidence in an objective and easy to follow way and reminds us there are two sides to every story and many modern conversations and decisions lack the clarity and objectivity provided by this book.
At 300 pages and 105,000 words, it blows open the Waitangi debate by investigating the events leading up to the Treaty, and what Maori really believed they were signing.
The Great Divide, working from the original documents from 200 years ago, directly challenges the findings of books like Michael King’s Penguin History of New Zealand or Claudia Orange’s Treaty of Waitangi, and in doing so offers a fresh new perspective on an issue affecting every single New Zealander.
