Description

Excerpt from The German Lyric The present book has grown from lectures delivered during the last ten years to the Graduation Class in the University of Aberdeen. Its primary object is to supply a lucid and concise guide to students of German minor poetry. If, in addition, it may serve a wider public, and attract readers to authors whom hitherto they may not have known, the author will regard his work as well-spent labour. Purely bio graphical details, which can be found in books of reference, have been strictly limited. Only the few facts are mentioned which form the necessary intro duction to the poetry itself. The books most frequently drawn upon for information were the standard histories of literature by Gervinus, Hettner, Scherer, Biese, Robertson, R. M. Meyer, and Kummer. Special mention should be made of the following treatises which deal more particularly with the nature and development of the lyric - witkop'sneuere deutsc/ze Lyri/e, R. M. Werner's [40773 and Lyrz'ker, Schure's Hz'stoz're da Lied, Biese's Deutscke Lyrz'e and neuere deutsc/ze Lyrz'ker, Susmann's Wesen der modemen deutsclzen Lyrz'k, Spiero's Gesc/zz'c/zfe der deutsc/zen Lyn'le sel't Claudius, Kretschmar's Gesc/zz'c/zte a'es deutsc/zen Lieder. Other important books are referred to in the notes. In all cases, however, the author has endeavoured to form an opinion of his own. An Englishman's view of German art must differ at many points from a German's. The former may, of course.
