From the year 2000, all teachers will have to register with, and pay an annual fee to, the General Teaching Council, the main professional body for teachers from all kinds of schools. The author of this text has been involved in developing the GTC since 1980, and offers an insider's view of the background and context of the GTC, and points to its potential role for the future of teaching. He details the practical implications and results for individual teachers alongside the education system as a whole.
