Description

Excerpt from The Future of Religion: Mr. G. K, Chesterton's Reply to Mr. Bernard Shaw We had got into a world in which the majority of the governing classes believed in no religion. Lle had known many editors and newspaper proprietors. But he had yet to meet one who believed in religion. The overwhelm ing mass of the governing body of the state was nu-christian. That was the first mistake, the mistake of the orthodox side. To suppose that the commonwealth was Christian. It was a heathen country to be conquered and redeemed. The second thing, the thing that people on the other side had to remember. Was that this was by no means a new experience for the Christian religion. The Christian religion. Especially in those historic and traditional forms as in the Roman Catholic, Greek. And. According to one theory. The Anglican Church, had existed for centuries, had again and again been in power and out of power. Been in turn persecuting and persecuted, without any power in the common wealth and with renewed power in the common wealth. Had gone on, up and down. Throughout the ages. They must not believe that they were living in an age in which the Christian religion had been eclipsed. For they were not.
