Description

This advanced textbook covering the fundamentals and industry applications of process intensification (PI) discusses both the theoretical and conceptual basis of the discipline. Since interdisciplinarity is a key feature of PI, the material contained in the book reaches far beyond the classical area of chemical engineering. Developments in other relevant disciplines, such as chemistry, catalysis, energy technology, applied physics, electronics and materials science, are extensively described and discussed, while maintaining a chemical engineering perspective. Divided into three major parts, the first introduces the PI principles in detail and illustrates them using practical examples. The second part is entirely devoted to fundamental approaches of PI in four domains: spatial, thermodynamic, functional and temporal. The third and final part explores the methodology for applying fundamental PI approaches in practice. As well as detailing technologies, the book focuses on safety, energy and environmental issues, giving guidance on how to incorporate PI in plant design and operation -- safely, efficiently and effectively.

Author Biography:

Andrzej Stankiewicz is Professor of Process Intensification and Scientific Director of the Delft Research Center for Sustainable Industrial Processes at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. With more than 30 years of industrial and academic research experience, he is author or co-author of ca. 100 publications on chemical reaction engineering, industrial catalysis and process intensification, and holds several patents in the field. He is Chairman of the Working Party on Process Intensification at the European Federation of Chemical Engineering and Chairman of the Executive Board of the European Process Intensification Centre (EUROPIC). He is also co-author and editor of the world's first book on Process Intensification: Re-Engineering the Chemical Processing Plant (Marcel Dekker, 2004) and Editor the journal Chemical Engineering and Processing: Process Intensification. Andrzej Stankiewicz received his M.Sc. degree in chemical engineering from Warsaw University of Technology and a Ph.D. degree from the Industrial Chemistry Research Institute in Warsaw. Tom van Gerven is Assistant Professor of Process Intensification at the University of Leuven, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. He is (co-)author of ca. 25 publications on process intensification, solid waste treatment and sustainable processing. After a 2-year postdoc position in the group of Andrzej Stankiewicz at Delft University of Technology, he is now establishing a research group in Leuven on the use of ultrasound, light and magnetic fields for efficient chemical processing. Recently he was appointed Secretary of the Working Party on Process Intensification at the European Federation of Chemical Engineering. He obtained his Ph.D degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Leuven in 2005.
