Elliott; With an Appendix on the Ornithology by Dr. Elliott Coues (Washington, 1873) Geologically speaking, the formation of these islands (which were discovered, and named after the discoverer, by the Russians in 1786) is recent, and in the opinion of Mr. Elliott, who resided there during the years 1872, 1873, is directly due to volcanic agency, which gradually upheaved them from the sea bed. Since the period of upheaval the sea has done much to modify and enlarge the largest island of the group whilst the others, being lifted abruptly above the power of water to carry and ice to deposit sand, soil, and boulders, are but little changed.
