Description

The Door in the Floor

Successful children's writer and illustrator Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges) invites 16-year-old writing intern Eddie (Jon Foster) to summer in the privileged beach community of East Hampton, where he lives with his beautiful wife Marion (Kim Basinger) and their young daughter Ruth.

Ted and Marion are still recovering from the death of their two teenage sons some years before and as a result their marriage is under great strain. Eddie, invited for the summer largely because of the physical resemblance he bears to one of the boys, is inevitably drawn into their deteriorating relationship, becoming an unwitting yet willing pawn and, ultimately, the catalyst in the transformation of their lives.

Special Features:

  • Feature Commentary with writer/director Tod Williams, director of photography Terry Stacey, editor Affonso Concalves, composer Marcelo Zarvos and costume designer Eric Daman Frame
  • On The Wall: The Making of Door in the Floor
  • From Novel to Screen with author John Irving
  • Anatomy of a Scene

Critic Reviews:

  • " Jeff Bridges is extraordinary as Ted Cole…this hothouse tale of grief, sex and betrayal is told with a cool detachment that renders it commendably unsentimental–and slightly remote. " – David Ansen
  • " One of the best Irving adaptations, a movie with a sad soul and something to say about that state in us all. " – Roger Moore
  • " It takes nerve to use dead children as apologists for adult misbehavior, but nerve is something novelist John Irving has never lacked. " – Jeannette Catsoulis
